Luke 16:1–4

“And he said also unto his disciples, There was a certain rich man, which had a steward; and the same was accused unto him that he had wasted his goods. And he called him, and said unto him, How is it that I hear this of thee? give an account of thy stewardship; for thou mayest be no longer steward. Then the steward said within himself, What shall I do? for my lord taketh away from me the stewardship: I cannot dig; to beg I am ashamed. I am resolved what to do, that, when I am put out of the stewardship, they may receive me into their houses.”

Through this account of the rich man and the steward, there are several life applications that can be learned and taken into consideration. If we view the rich man as our Heavenly Father and the steward as ourselves, it gives us several examples that we can live by and shows us ways that make our character important through various situations.

Just as the rich man hired an accountant to handle his affairs, the Lord has appointed us here on earth to carry out his plans and follow through with them with respect and honesty and make them our high priority. When we are given tasks either from our parents or authority, the Lord commands us to honor and obey with diligence.

The rich man then called for the steward and asked him to give account of his stewardship. The rich man found out about the steward’s dishonesty and told him to pack his things and leave. We must all come to the realization that one day we will have to give account of everything we have done here on this earth. God has placed authorities in our lives to help us grow and teach us numerous important things, but it is up to us to use the wisdom that the Lord also graciously grants us to make wise decisions about our actions.

When the Lord takes certain things away from us, it is only for our benefit. He is the God of both the good and the bad and we cannot blame the Lord for taking things away or placing situations or people in our lives that we do not like. The Lord sends us people or events that will change our hearts and improve our character.

Only with the Lord’s help will the answer to our problems become clear and work out in our lives. He gives us the grace to become good stewards of the things in our life and the wisdom we need to work through things as we give our account to the Lord.
