“Whistle While You Work”
This past week twelve other members of the Verity staff and I drove to Flint, Michigan to serve at an annual banquet hosted by the Riverfront Character Inn, (the former home of Verity). While I was reluctant to abandon my responsibilities in the office for a few days, I knew all of us were in for a great time doing whatever needed to be done at the RCI for the banquet. Sure enough, we Verity staffers had a productive and fun-filled, memory-making trip.
We arrived at the RCI late Tuesday evening. After visiting in the lobby with several old RCI staff friends, we settled in the former Verity dorm rooms for a good night’s sleep. Early Wednesday morning we rose, ready for the busy day ahead of us. Throughout the day, we all took our posts greeting guests, preparing food, waiting tables, and cleaning.
We worked hard, and had a lot of fun at it! In fact, that’s something I’d say about anything we do at Verity. This positive attitude, this mentality that says, “Let’s get to work and have fun doing it,” is one of the aspects that I appreciate most about Verity student life. When I was a student, I knew that I could always count on being on a dish-pit team that would work hard to get the job done as well and as fast as we could. Often when my classmates and I were asked to help with additional chores, we enjoyed talking and laughing with each other as we worked together.
I see in the Verity student body a group of people who are committed to demonstrating our love for God and for others through our actions and attitudes. Yes, we each are at differing levels of maturity; and yes, we each have our “moments,” but the overall positive attitude has made a significant impact on me. I am routinely challenged, encouraged, and uplifted as I am surrounded by dynamic people like the Verity students and faculty and the South Campus staff.
