CIT Suggested Prerequisites

The Verity CIT program operates on an intense, fast-paced schedule. Many students, especially those who do not have much background in computers or math, are unable to finish it in the normal 21-month program duration. In order to be able to finish the CIT program in an efficient and effective manner, it is suggested that all incoming CIT students meet the following prerequisites:

  • Completion of at least one semester of calculus or equivalent
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Windows 2000/XP
  • Moderate understanding of computer internals and networking

We have located several resources to help you prepare for your CIT degree.

Calculus Preparation

We have several recommended ways of learning calculus, including any one of the following calculus courses:

Computer Skills Preparation

Here are some ideas to help you learn the necessary computer skills:

  • Networking
  • Tech Support
    • Fix family’s and friends’ computer problems
  • Computer Disassembly/Reassembly
    • Tear apart old computers
    • Put computers back together
    • Learn the names and purposes of each part
    • Understand the dangers of static to equipment
  • Volunteer as Network Administrator
    • Become familiar with networking hardware
    • Learn how to install Windows OS

IT Certifications Head Start

The first step towards earning the MCSA certification is a test on the Windows XP operating system. (For more information on this see the CIT Course Descriptions page.) Taking this test before coming to Verity can be a good indicator of whether the CIT program is for you. To prepare for the test, we recommend the book MCSA/MCSE Self-Paced Training Kit for Exam 70-270. This guide contains the lessons, walk-throughs, tutorials, and practice questions to enable you to pass the exam. Feel free to contact the CIT department at cit@verity.iblp.org if you have any questions about this test.
